These ants are known as small honey ants, false honey ants, or winter ants. They are yellow to brown, 2–4 mm, and have a constriction on the thorax that gives them an hourglass shape from a dorsal view. They forage in very cold conditions, hence the name winter ant. Their food sources include honeydew and sweets, but they will also feed on household foods such as bread and meat. These ants nest in soil but may trail into structures in inclement weather.

Primary Concern with Small Honey Ants

These are nuisance pests. Homeowners become aware of their presence in the early spring when other ants have not begun foraging. Vegetation in contact with a structure provides an avenue for these ants to enter the home.
